Gescan is proud to introduce our Lighting Specialist James Lee, who works out of our Vancouver office. James brings twelve (12) years of experience to our Lighting division. He supports branches across BC with their day-to-day lighting inquiries, tenders, design-built projects, simulations and supports our customers with their BC Hydro Incentive Programs.

James began his career in lighting after working at the Commercial Division of Korean Consulate where his team marketed Korean products to Western Canada. After learning that LEDs were becoming more market-friendly, James decided to get hands-on experience in delivery and lighting to learn more about lamps and their applications. After realizing that he was more passionate about the technical side of the business, James moved from Outside to Inside Sales and used simulations, ROI analysis and other respective computer programs to provide better and faster solutions to his team and clients.

As a member of BC Hydro’s Alliance of Energy Professionals, a part of James’ role is helping businesses in BC understand potential savings from making the switch to LEDs.

Through conducting an ROI analysis, businesses can see the upfront costs and payback periods when upgrading from traditional lighting technology to an eligible LED product through a one-to-one incentive swap. In some cases, business owners can save up to 50% of project costs by making a simple LED switch:

“For the end-user, with the incentive from BC Hydro, their initial investment is subsidized which means the return of investment period is shortened. On top of this, during the audit for the potential incentive program, 90% of end-users find out where they are wasting power by operating a wrong source/quantity of lighting fixtures.”

As technological developments in LED improve with fewer wattages (energy) being used to produce higher lumen outputs (brightness) for various types of fixtures and lamps, James helps his clients keep up-to-date with the latest trends in LED:

“Where our value comes in, is in understanding the technical information that’s not available online, such as how your fixture will interact with your controls, or with other fixtures in your space, or if you need other materials. Our goal is always to provide the best load performance for the space, at the best cost.”

From a project perspective, James brings extensive experience advising property managers, electrical contractors, designers, and business owners on power-saving solutions through using LED fixtures and lighting controls. Whether for a one-room residential project or a full-scale commercial and industrial project.

With a graduate degree in sociology and psychology, and previous experience in Marketing and Sales Management, James’ unconventional road into lighting has been an advantage in his career. His educational background and experience allow him to understand the technical requirements of a design-build, as well as the business considerations that go into property management. He understands how monthly savings can help Property Managers market their property to be more valuable to buyers and how these savings can also be reallocated to other areas of their operations.

With a love for the outdoors, James spends his free time enjoying outside activities and playing sports such as basketball, soccer and frisbee.
